Looking for a campsite with exclusive 4×4 routes to explore? The Western Cape offers some of the most exciting and diverse terrains in the country and we’ve rounded up some of our favourites for you to consider…
Boegoeberg 4×4, Graafwater

Boegoeberg 4×4 is located on a large rooibos and buchu farm in Graafwater near Clanwilliam. It offers several exciting 4×4 trails to explore and to keep coming back to. If you’re looking for trails to put your off-roading skills to the test, Boegoeberg’s trails are worth the challenge.
Boegoeberg’s 4×4 trails were once footpaths used to carry buchu down the mountain and now 4×4 enthusiasts can enjoy some of its challenging and fun obstacles until reaching Platklip viewpoint with a panoramic view of Clan William and its surrounds.
Camping at Boegoeberg
Boegoeberg offers a variety of accommodation and camping options. Its main camping area consists of 50 shaded campsites with ablution blocks, power points at each site and a great lapa area for family and friends to enjoy themselves after a fun day on the trails.
Those looking for something more secluded can travel up the mountain track and set up camp at ‘Die Kliphuis Camp’, a rustic campsite high up in the mountains alongside a cliff face with a donkey-powered hot shower and flushing toilets.
‘Buurman Se Gat’, another rustic spot located along the mountain track, is a sandstone shelter that provides beds and a bucket shower with the option for additional guests to set up camp outside it. If you’re up for a quick 10-minute hike you’ll find a beautiful waterfall that runs all year round.
Kroonland 4×4, Villiersdorp

Located just outside of Villiersdorp and on ‘Kaaimansgat’ farm, Kroonland 4×4 has its own adventurous circular 4×4 route for campers to experience. The trail is about 15 km long and winds through a stunning kloof and various other mountain roads offering views of the farmland below as well as Theewaterskloof Dam. Head there in the wintertime when temperatures drop and you might be able to enjoy some off-roading in the snow!
Camping at Kroonland
Kroonland 4×4’s secluded campsite is located in the mountain range and on the banks of a tranquil stream. Although the campsites have limited shade, there is a lovely communal lapa area in close proximity of the camp with seating braai facilities for campers to relax and enjoy themselves. It also offers hot showers from its ablution facility.
The campsites, located on grass, are all non-powered and cater to simplistic, off-grid camping for those wanting a ‘faraway feeling’.
Leopard’s Tree Campsite, Citrusdal
Located at the foot of the Cederberg mountains, just south of Citrusdal, Leopard’s Tree Campsite offers pet-friendly camping on a beautiful farm with numerous trails for hiking, mountain biking and off-roading.
The owners of Leopards Tree Campsite do a wonderful job at giving those who love to explore off-the-beaten-track a personalised and memorable experience, so don’t be shy to ask them to show you the way around their trails while you’re there. We didn’t know much about their 4×4 route to start with and it was only when they realised our love of all things off-road that we were invited to join on an epic 4×4 adventure through their beautiful mountains. The 4×4 route offers breathtaking views of gorgeous valleys, dramatic rock formations and endless scenery to absorb.
Camping at Leopard’s Tree
If you prefer uninterrupted camping in solitude over vibrant camping resorts, add Leopard’s Tree to your ‘peaceful campsites’ list. Leopard’s Tree Campsite ensures that guests comply and adhere to its ‘No Loud Noise’ policy by including a noise compliance fee in the upfront deposit amount. So you can rest assured you won’t be camping next to any party-goers with loudspeakers during your time here.
Each campsite provides an electric plug point, water points as well as a braai place, and accommodates up to 4 campers per stand (an extra 2 can be accommodated at an extra cost). Communal ablution facilities are located near the first few sites and provide showers with hot water, basins, and flushing toilets, and campers can also make use of the communal kitchen with a wash-up area and fridges/freezers.
Klein Tafelberg 4×4, Redelinghuys

Located between the small towns of Redelinghuys and Aurora, Klein Tafelberg’s adventurous 4×4 route (voted one of South Africa’s top 10 4×4 trails) has been luring campers from all over the country to its playground for years.
Klein Tafelberg’s 4×4 route includes about 20 km of wild off-roading fun. Some challenging, but oh-so-worth-it 4×4 obstacles with names you won’t forget (Heart-Break Hill & Milkshake Hill to name a few) require low range, low tyre pressure and high levels of enthusiasm.
The obstacles become more challenging as you venture through the trail, with Steps being one of the most exciting of them all. It’s a steep and rocky side slope that must be climbed with the right amount of momentum and precision before reaching the top of the mountain where the picnic site and wild camping spots are located.
Camping at Klein Tafelberg
The managers and owners of Klein Tafelberg have done an impressive job at upgrading the various accommodation options for guests. In addition to improvements made to its general campsite, you can also opt for one of three off-site mountain top campsites, or if you want to ‘camp’ without pitching a tent yourself you can opt for a bit of glamping by booking one of the new Luxury Safari Tents.
The main camping area offers 33 standard campsites, each with its own electrical point, a braai drum, and a tap with cold running water. It also provides a communal washing-up area, as well as access to neat and clean ablution blocks with flushing loos and showers with hot water.

Leeuwenboschfontein Guest Farm, Touwsrivier

Home to one of Go! Drive Out’s Top Ten 4×4 trails, Leeuwenboschfontein Guest Farm is set in the Western Cape’s Klein Karoo (Little Karoo) near the towns of Montagu and Touwsrivier. Leeuwenboschfontein is a haven for 4×4 enthusiasts and offers a number of mountain trails and obstacle routes to explore during your stay. A 20km well-maintained mountain trail starts at the farm’s main house and winds up the mountain where you’ll summit at 1 400 m above sea level. Once you’ve reached the top you can enjoy 360° views from a shelter that provides a built-in work surface and cosy braai area. From here you’ll descend down the trail’s circular route which involves some technical but fun challenges.
Camping at Leeuwenboschfontein
Leeuwenboschfontein’s standard, family-friendly, campsite offers 29 separate stands at the base of the beautiful farm surrounded by endless views of the Klein Karoo mountains. Some of the farm’s more rustic, offsite camping options include the area surrounding the mountaintop shelter where guests will need to be more self-sufficient with a 4×4 vehicle to access it.
